Human Capital...Or Is It Cattle?

First it was "personnel." Okay, so Clint Eastwood in "Dirty Harry" forced companies to change to "Human Resources" when he muttered, "Personnel is for pukes."

But "personnel" is so vastly better than the newest words used by corporations to describe the people who work for them: Human Capital. I picture bosses all over the world being issued cattle prods and whips as they herd their "human capital" into greater and greater heights of productivity without commensurate pay increases.

Of course,in terms of the nonexistent relationship between productivity and pay, this is what is happening now. But at least, to this point, companies have refrained from the analogy to cattle. Perhaps they will now be emboldened by the latest Supreme Court ruling giving corporations free rein to buy any election they choose.

So here's to the future of our human cattle. Soylent Green anyone?

Scientific "Evidence" Makes No Difference

The scientific "evidence" in support of or against global warming means nothing. People either "believe" in global warming or they don't. It has become an article of faith, not science. Based on their beliefs, people will find evidence to confirm or deny whatever prejudice they have.

So forget whether you "believe" in global warming or not and consider the evidence of your experience: I’ll bet you know someone who has developed asthma fairly recently. I’ll bet your city, town, village has “non burn” days when you're asked to not have a fire in your fireplace or to not burn leaves outdoors. I’ll bet you have days when your city, town, village, asks you not to drive because it’s a “high pollution advisory” day. I’ll bet you know people who have been diagnosed with lung cancer and they never smoked.
If we wait for the scientific studies to conclusively “prove” something, we’ll be waiting for a very long time.
We all need to to stop reading studies and simply go outside and breathe. Then, when you've stopped coughing, get mad. Stop just caring about the environment. Caring makes absolutely no difference. The only thing that will make a difference is action.
