Human Capital...Or Is It Cattle?

First it was "personnel." Okay, so Clint Eastwood in "Dirty Harry" forced companies to change to "Human Resources" when he muttered, "Personnel is for pukes."

But "personnel" is so vastly better than the newest words used by corporations to describe the people who work for them: Human Capital. I picture bosses all over the world being issued cattle prods and whips as they herd their "human capital" into greater and greater heights of productivity without commensurate pay increases.

Of course,in terms of the nonexistent relationship between productivity and pay, this is what is happening now. But at least, to this point, companies have refrained from the analogy to cattle. Perhaps they will now be emboldened by the latest Supreme Court ruling giving corporations free rein to buy any election they choose.

So here's to the future of our human cattle. Soylent Green anyone?
